Last week, the National Book Award winners were announced in NYC. One of my favorite authors, Louise Erdrich, was the recipient of the fiction award for The Round House, the 2nd book in her planned trilogy, about an Ojibwe family in 1980s North Dakota.
Katherine Boo won the non-fiction award for Beyond the Beautiful Forevers: Life, Death and Hope in a Mumbai Undercity. Boo's book, her first , set in a Mumbai slum, is the story of a boy and his harsh and illuminating education in the consequences of crime or perceived crime.
For information on the other winners, The Week has the complete guide.
